Gay or Straight, a Bigot is a Bigot

Before last June, Kim Davis of Rowan County, Kentucky, was simply a 44-year-old three-time divorced woman with two children out-of-wedlock. She was hardly a candidate for true north indicator on the moral compass of America, especially by Christian standards. Through the miracle of divine intervention and forgiveness, today that’s changed.

Kim is an elected official who refuses to do her job. Nothing new there. Congress has let the government grind to a halt many times while refusing to vote on a budget. Congress is guilty of political posturing in trying to get one special interest bill or the other passed in order to forward a budget. Kim neglects her duty because God told her to.

Kim Davis, however, invoked “God’s authority” as she defied a series of federal court orders and continued to deny marriage licenses to same-sex couples. In fact, she denied marriage licenses to everyone in a clever attempt to appear non-discriminatory. She also knew that by not issuing marriage licenses at all, she would draw maximum attention to her misguided cause.

This lady has the Lord on speed dial. According to her, he talks directly to her and has told her what is right for the citizens she was elected to serve — regardless of what the law says.

She is known for wearing dresses down to her ankles.  That’s probably the only public service she provides.

Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” Mark 12:17.

See, I was listening in Sunday school. Kim Davis wasn’t. She interprets everything, the law or God’s word, the way she wants it to be. It’s not difficult to understand why she was divorced three times.

kimdavisbibleUnder her rule, couples have cried and pleaded for a marriage license, something to which they were legally entitled. They have screamed and threatened, calling her a bigot. They have tried reasoning with her to no avail.

So far, four couples, two gay and two straight, sued her, arguing she must fulfill her official duties regardless of her faith. AU.S. District Judge ordered her to issue the licenses. An appeals court affirmed that order. The Supreme Court on Monday refused to intervene, which means the final word has been spoken. She has no further legal standing. Nevertheless, in the style of someone who is right, or righteous, she continues her stubborn refusal while being cheered on by a throng of Christians. You can bet that someday this will be a Lifetime movie.

The Christian law firm Liberty Counsel is representing Davis. It’s ironic how a firm that seeks to deny liberty to some people would use it in their name. You can bet there will be crowd funding from like-minded right wingers that will make sure Liberty Counsel is well paid for their efforts.

“It is a heaven or hell decision,” she said in a statement. Actually, I think it’s more of a “work or get fired” decision. Unfortunately, not even a federal judge can fire an elected official. They can toss them in jail though, which is where this lady needs to be.

There’s no shortage of drama in Moorehead, Kentucky. Husband number four, Joe Davis, defended his wife as a protest raged on the courthouse lawn. He said that people have threatened to kill her and set their house on fire. While that may be extreme and illegal, so are the actions of his dear wife.

Kim and Joe don’t agree on everything. According to court records, Kim Davis has been married to Joe husband twice, with a divorce and another husband in between. Now I can see why she doesn’t have much faith in the institution of marriage.  Ironically, according to the Bible, the adulterous Kim Davis should have been stoned to death years ago.

Husband Joe described himself as “an old redneck hillbilly,” as he motioned the rainbow flag-waving protesters on the courthouse lawn. Joe, you give rednecks a bad name. The bigotry of you and your wife is no different from that of the Ku Klux Klan.

While this lady has high regard for the laws of God, she has no use at all for the laws of the land. According to the 14th Amendment:

“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

She is trying to establish her religion as the official religion in her county, violating the First Amendment. She has denied people jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. While she has had her due process of law, even though it didn’t turn out in her favor, she has denied that same right to others. She is, without a doubt, in contempt of court.

There is no difference between Kim Davis and ISIS. Both want their religion to replace the law of the land. She’s no different than a tyrannical Muslim cleric wearing a turban and saying, “Allah does not want this.”

If this sounds like a personal attack on Kim Davis, it is. I hope she is given some serious jail time so that she can reflect not only on her beliefs but her responsibility as the county clerk. If the voters of Rowan County, Kentucky, don’t recall this idiot, then they deserve everything they get.  If there’s one thing more vile and disgusting than a religious zealot using public office as a pulpit, it’s the mindless idiots who support her.
